About Whiplash

Accident Clinic Miami Banner

Your neck is composed of small muscles and vertebrae that enable you to control your head movements. However, if your head is suddenly jerked in an unexpected manner, this creates great pressure on the neck muscles and upper cervical spine. In fact, it can lead to muscle tears and herniated discs in your vertebrae.

You might have immediate neck pain, but in a few days, those muscles and vertebrae will become inflamed. When this inflammation and swelling occurs, it causes your neck muscles to seize up. You are no longer able to move your neck and are suffering from whiplash.

Importance of Early Treatment

If you have been injured in an auto accident, you have a narrow time frame in which to seek medical treatment. After this time has passed you are unable to file a claim for your treatment costs. As noted, with whiplash it can take days and even weeks before the neck muscles lose mobility with this condition.

You may think you are just fine in the meantime, and not go to visit a chiropractor. This is a major mistake since we can detect whiplash and start treatment immediately. As a result, we recommend that you make an appointment as soon as possible after your neck injury to get checked for whiplash.

Chiropractic Care for Whiplash

Treating whiplash begins with reducing the inflammation in the neck muscles. We can utilize massage therapy to help reduce the swelling. Once the inflammation has started to subside, we are able to provide spinal decompression and chiropractic adjustments. This enables our chiropractic doctor to realign your upper cervical vertebrae and relieve pressure on bulging or herniated discs. You will begin to experience neck pain relief and see mobility improvements as you recover from whiplash.

Whiplash FAQs

Whiplash is often referred to as an injury, but it’s better described as an injury syndrome, a set of recognized symptoms that correspond to a particular physical imbalance. It is a painful neck problem related to damage from extreme hyperextension and hyperflexion of the cervical spine.

Whiplash is most famously associated with auto accidents. An automobile impact (at practically any rate of speed) or anything else that produces a sudden stop can send the weight of your head flying backward and then forward again with considerable force. Each of these actions can damage the muscles and connective tissues of the neck. The cervical joints can be nudged out of alignment as well, while the discs between vertebrae may herniate and make contact with sensitive nerve roots.

Additionally, whiplash is known to occur from Sports Injury and other Sports-Related issues that cause a sudden jolt of the head.

Whiplash can cause a wider variety of symptoms than you might realize. In addition to the expected neck pain and inability to turn your head, you may also experience headaches, migraines, jaw or facial pain, shoulder pain, mood changes, ringing in the ears and/or blurred vision. Your hands or arms may feel numb, painful, tingly or weak.

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms of whiplash, you will probably know to seek immediate medical care. But even if your neck feels fine, you still need to get it (and the rest of you) evaluated immediately. Hidden injuries may note register symptoms right away, or even for days, due to the shock and adrenaline rush of the accident itself. By delaying diagnosis and treatment, you may also miss your window of opportunity for filing any claims for financial compensation.

Emergency medical teams know how to treat many kinds of traumatic injuries, but chiropractors are better qualified than other medical professionals to treat whiplash. Our chiropractor has many years of experience in diagnosing and treating even subtle deviations from normal cervical alignment.

When administered by a skilled, experienced chiropractor such as Dr. Abramson and any of his other chiropractors, chiropractic care is quite safe as part of a holistic whiplash treatment plan. It may even eliminate the need for other treatment measures that carry known safety risks, such as neck surgery.

Chiropractic care can greatly ease your whiplash symptoms by treating the underlying alignment issues that cause those symptoms. Our chiropractors can shift your cervical spinal structures back into their proper position through chiropractic adjustment, reducing pain, restoring neck mobility, and correcting any changes in the curvature of your neck.

Depending on your particular injuries, our chiropractors may prescribe whiplash treatment modalities such as spinal decompression (to treat herniated discs) and corrective exercises (to restore neck strength and mobility).
